Call for papers

This call for papers is aimed at anyone interested in the mysterious link between language and thought on the one hand, and the reality of the world on the other. The Saussurian opposition between signifiant and signifié placed great store on language and thought. But this dichotomy has undoubtedly weakened the study of reference in linguistics. In fact, the structuralist position on reference represents a break with a tradition going back to Antiquity. Structuralism certainly allowed for great advances to be made in the understanding of language throughout the 20th century, yet its non-referential conception of the sign has probably had its day.

Modern linguistics now seems to be caught between cognitivist theories, generally unaware of their metaphysical nature, and descriptive, often corpus-based approaches, which are not much concerned with explanation. The former are rationalist, the latter empiricist, and both have inherited the Cartesian view of the world which prevails in Western culture and constitutes our default mode of thinking. Perhaps the moment has come for linguists to explore the non-Cartesian philosophical legacy of 20th century, namely the Heideggerian continental school of post-modern philosophy and the more critical branches of analytical philosophy, notably those inspired by Wittgenstein and Peirce. Such a reappraisal could help us put linguistic theory firmly back on its three semiotic legs.

We therefore contend that linguistic theory could make significant progress within a framework of naming, reference and usage. Such a conception of language must of course be defined more precisely, and this is why we have decided to set up a gathering of like minds on this very topic. The first RES PER NOMEN colloquium will be held in May 2007 at the University of Reims. The aim is primarily to allow for an initial meeting and to provide an overview of existing research in this area, as well as to set up future research programmes. Papers are invited on any relevant topic, such as the following :

- the object in language
- reference in philosophy and linguistics
- post-modern philosophy vs. philosophy of language
- metaphysics in linguistic thought
- meaning and interpretation
- usage and semantics
- usage and syntax
- categories
- truth, untruth and linguistic theory
- the status of laws and rules in linguistics
- the act of naming
- Peirce, Wittgenstein, Derrida, Gadamer, Heidegger, etc. on reference in language
- sign and ontology
- the problem with cognitivism
- developing syntax without rules
- developing semantics without universals
- et caetera…

Programme

The venue

Reims is located East of Paris at the junction of the A4 (Paris-Strasbourg) and A26 (Calais-Lyon) motorways. Train connections are reasonably adequate, especially from Paris. Reims is famous for its champagne, which is produced in the region. Yet the city can also boast architectural and historical landmarks, among which the Cathédrale Notre-Dame with its Smiling Angel and the Basilique Saint-Rémy, where some of the early Kings of France are buried. The Arts Faculty (UFR des Lettres et Sciences Humaines de l'Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne) is situated in the South-West of the city. Click here, and then type "université", "57 rue Pierre Taittinger" and "Reims" where adequate. This site also offer aerial photographs. To reach the University by bus from the station, walk the short distance to the Theatre (10 minutes), and then take the H line towards Croix-Rouge, get off at Facultés. Taxis are also available at the station.
